incubus of the orphic night
panting, suffocating as she is carried off
intoxicating ravishment of the night draws near

‘nightmare’ has nothing to do with a female horse: originating before the 1300s, ‘mare’ goes back to an old word which existed in many languages related to the precursor of german – a word for a demon who might visit you in your dreams…
